Georgia Senate panel advances ban on social media censorship

ATLANTA — A Georgia state Senate committee has advanced a proposal for the state to prohibit social media platforms from removing or censoring content amid an outcry from conservatives that their political views are being discriminated against, even though a similar Texas law has been put on hold by a federal court. The Senate Regulated Industries and Utilities Committee voted 6-5 on Tuesday for Senate Bill 393, sending it to the full Senate for more debate. It declares that social media companies that have more than 20 million users in the United States are common carriers and that they can’t block people from receiving certain messages based on viewpoints, location, race, ethnicity, religion, political beliefs, gender, sexual orientation or disability. NBC’s Mike Tirico looks to finish Olympics after Super Sunday

LOS ANGELES — Mike Tirico has traveled over 12,500 miles in the air over the past week and hosted two major sporting events. And he still isn’t done. Tirico is back at NBC Sports Group headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut, to host the final week of the Winter Olympics. He anchored primetime coverage the first five days from Beijing before flying back to the U.S. on Feb. 8. He did the Feb. 9-10 shows from NBC’s headquarters before going to Los Angeles, where he hosted the Super Bowl and three days of Olympics. “We’ve hosted the Olympics from this lake set (outside SoFi Stadium), from the field of the Super Bowl, from China and from our studio in Connecticut all in like a week, which is just nuts,” Tirico said Sunday night after hosting the Olympic primetime show. “It’s a big difference f...

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The hit series “Yellowstone” is becoming a mothership with yet another prequel. The Paramount+ streaming service said it has ordered the series “1932,” about the roots of the Dutton ranching family first introduced in the contemporary drama “Yellowstone.” The cast and release date for “1932” were not announced. The new chapter will focus on the Duttons during Prohibition and the Great Depression, Paramount+ said. The first prequel, “1883” is in its first season and will be back for a second, the service said Tuesday. Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are among the stars. Kevin Costner leads the cast of “Yellowstone,” which launched creator-producer Taylor Sheridan’s western expansion saga on cable’s Paramount Network. “While most shows franchise near the end of th...

P.J. O’Rourke, irreverent author and commentator, dead at 74

NEW YORK (AP) — P.J. O’Rourke, the prolific author and satirist who re-fashioned the irreverence and “Gonzo” journalism of the 1960s counterculture into a distinctive brand of conservative and libertarian commentary, has died at age 74. O’Rourke died Tuesday morning, according to Grove Atlantic Inc. Books publisher and president Morgan Entrekin. He did not cite a specific cause, but said O’Rourke had been ill in recent months. O’Rourke was a Toledo, Ohio, native who evolved from long-haired student activist to wavy-haired scourge of his old liberal ideals, with some of his more widely read take downs appearing in a founding counterculture publication, Rolling Stone. His career otherwise extended from the early years of National Lampoon to a brief stint on “60 Minutes” in which he represent...

It’s a yes! Simone Biles engaged to Jonathan Owens on V-day

Biles, 24, and Houston Texans safety Owens, 26, have been dating for nearly two years. Owens took a knee in a set of photos the most decorated gymnast of all time shared on Twitter and Instagram. They were in a gazebo, and Biles was dressed all the way up in a black mini dress and heels. Owens beamed as he placed a substantial rock on her finger. Alec Baldwin sued by Halyna Hutchins’ family after ‘Rust’ set fatal shooting

LOS ANGELES — The family of a cinematographer shot and killed on the set of the film “Rust” sued Alec Baldwin and the movie’s producers Tuesday for wrongful death. Lawyers for the family of Halyna Hutchins announced the lawsuit filed in New Mexico in the name of Hutchins‘ husband, Matthew Hutchins, and their son, Andros, at a Los Angeles news conference. At least four other lawsuits have been filed over the shooting, but this is the first directly tied to one of the two people shot. The “reckless conduct and cost-cutting measures” of Baldwin and the film’s producers “led to the death of Halyna Hutchins,” attorney Brian Panish said. A video created by the attorneys showed an animated recreation of the shooting. Baldwin, who was also a producer on the film, was pointing a gun at Hutchins d...

The lasting chess legacies of Arthur Feuerstein, Yuri Averbakh

“Arthur W. Feuerstein of New York (Bronx), age 22; works for IBM on computers; member of U.S. Student Team in Iceland, 1957; U.S. Junior ‘Rapid Champion’, 1956; placed third in the Third Rosenwald tournament, 1956.” That was the mini-bio the magazine Chess Review offered in its February 1958 issue of one of the most promising young stars on the American chess scene, about to play in his first U.S. championship. The winner of the tournament, a 14-year-old Brooklyn high schooler named Bobby Fischer, went to bigger and better things, but that little notice sparks melancholy thoughts about how far many of the promising generation of postwar American players might have gone — even lacking Fischer’s drive and genius — had they had the training and support system Soviet players of the era enjoyed...

Super Bowl 56 tops 100 million viewers in return to form

Sunday’s Super Bowl between the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals proved to be a huge hit for the NFL as the game drew more than 100 million viewers, according to Nielsen and NBC Universal.  The game averaged 99.2 million viewers on NBC alone — but ratings surpassed the 100 million viewer mark after incorporating the Spanish broadcast from Telemundo and streaming outlets such as Peacock. The Wall Street Journal reported that the final number was about 112 million — a 12.6% jump from last year’s contest.  The Super Bowl was another strong showing for the NFL, which experienced a bit of a resurgence in 2021. The league’s regular-season ratings were up 10% after the numbers fell the year prior during the COVID-19 pandemic. The league averaged 17.1 million viewers, marking ...

Super Bowl has 101.1 million TV viewers, up from 2021

NEW YORK — An estimated 101.1 million people watched the Los Angeles Rams win the Super Bowl over the Cincinnati Bengals on NBC and Telemundo, up from 2021 and capping a stirring playoff schedule for the NFL. Last year’s game had a television audience of 92 million, the lowest since 2006. The Nielsen company said another 11.2 million people streamed the game, putting the total audience at 112.3 million people. The game went down to the wire, like most playoff games this season, and competitiveness usually adds viewers. The game defied trends in television, which consistently sees viewership drop from year to year. Nielsen said that 99.2 million people watched the game on NBC, and another 1.9 million on the Spanish-language network Telemundo. Copyright © 2022 The Washington Times, LLC. ...

Prince Andrew sex abuse lawsuit settled, say lawyers

NEW YORK (AP) — A tentative settlement has been reached in a lawsuit accusing Prince Andrew of sexually abusing Virginia Giuffre when she was 17 years old in which the prince will make a substantial donation to the charity of his accuser and says he never intended to malign her character, according to a court filing Tuesday. Attorney David Boies, who represents Giuffre, said in a filing in Manhattan federal court that lawyers on both sides were informing the judge that a settlement in principle has been reached and they’ll request a dismissal of the lawsuit within a month. Meanwhile, the letter said, the judge should suspend all deadlines and hold the action in abeyance. Giuffre sued Andrew in August. The American accused the British royal of sexually abusing her when she was 17 while sh...
