Judge blocks release of records in Bob Saget’s death

A Florida judge granted the request of Bob Saget’s family to block the release of records pertaining to the comedian’s death last month.  The decision comes three days after the family filed a lawsuit against Florida officials to block the distribution of evidence. A medical examiner ruled that the comedian died from a fall in his Orlando hotel room in January.  Orange County Circuit Judge Vincent Chin sided with the family.  “Plaintiffs will suffer irreparable harm in the form of severe mental pain, anguish and emotional distress if the requested temporary injunction is not granted,” Judge Chiu wrote. The order will remain in effect until the court makes an updated decision.

CNN won’t release internal report on Chris Cuomo, Jeff Zucker ousters

NEW YORK — CNN’s parent company says it has completed its investigation into circumstances surrounding the firing of anchor Chris Cuomo and ouster of network chief Jeff Zucker. But for a news organization, it has chosen to leave questions unanswered. The internal report, commissioned in September and prepared by the law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore, will not be made public, WarnerMedia said on Wednesday. WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar told CNN employees late Tuesday that the report had been finished over the weekend. His memo said that marketing executive Allison Gollust, the woman whose relationship with Zucker led to his downfall, would also be leaving the company. Kilar said the probe, based on interviews with more than 40 people and a review of over 100,000 texts and emails, “found ...

Apple TV series recasts Frederick Douglass as Lincoln’s equal

It’s time to reinvent Frederick Douglass as the equal of Abraham Lincoln in the 19th-century fight to end slavery in the U.S., according to the historian behind Apple TV’s new “Lincoln’s Dilemma” series. David S. Reynolds said the streaming series that premieres Friday reflects a Black Lives Matter-inspired effort among academics to replace White-savior narratives with a renewed emphasis on Black figures like the slave-turned-abolitionist Douglass. “There’s a sea change today toward resurrecting and emphasizing the history of African-Americans,” Mr. Reynolds told The Washington Times in an interview. “This documentary represents that. But we don’t want to swing the pendulum too far away from Lincoln hagiography to putting Douglass up on a pedestal.” Mr. Reynolds, a distinguished professo...

Judge in Sarah Palin case says jurors knew before verdict that he’d rejected her claims

NEW YORK — The judge presiding over the libel lawsuit brought by former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin against The New York Times said Wednesday that jurors knew before delivering their verdict that he’d already decided to rule against Palin but they said it didn’t affect the outcome. U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff said in a written order that several jurors told a law clerk after deciding against Palin on Tuesday that they had received news flashes on their phones about Rakoff’s Monday announcement that he‘d toss out the lawsuit regardless of the verdict. “The jurors repeatedly assured the Court’s law clerk that these notifications had not affected them in any way or played any role whatever in their deliberations,” Rakoff wrote. The judge invited lawyers to speak up if they wa...

Streaming services hike prices again

Once seen as a cheaper alternative to cable, several streaming platforms keep raising their prices. Amazon Prime, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, and Netflix are all raising their rates as they gain more market share with more people joining the cut-the-cord movement. Amazon is raising the price of Amazon Prime to $139 a year from $119. Netflix is upping the cost by $1 or $2 per month with its basic plan up to $15.50 from $14 and its premium plan going to $20 from $18 per month. Netflix told its customers it was a “price update.” The price has been steadily updated in recent years, jumping from $11 a month to $13 in 2019 and then to $14 in 2020. Because shows are often featured on one platform exclusively, customers often opt for multiple subscriptions. “Services really see content as their weap...

Shailene Woodley and Aaron Rodgers have broken up

The relationship between “Divergent” actress Shailene Woodley and NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers is over, according to InTouch Weekly.  A source close to Mr. Rodgers told People that the breakup was “amicable.” The couple was engaged, but Mr. Rodgers’ demanding career took a toll on Ms. Woodley.  “While Shailene is supportive of Aaron’s career, he put football first and they were barely spending any time together,” one insider said. “She felt he neglected their relationship. Neither of them was happy.” During the engagement, Ms. Woodley told Entertainment Tonight in July that there wasn’t any wedding planning going on.

Kanye West doesn’t want you to watch the new Kanye West documentary

Netflix is set to debut a three-part documentary on the life of Kanye West Wednesday, but the show’s subject would prefer people not watch it.  Mr. West is not happy with the project— titled “Jeen-Yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy” — and would like to make edits.  “I must get final edit and approval on this doc before it releases on Netflix,” Mr. West wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post. “Open the edit room immediately so I can be in charge of my own image.” “Jeen-Yuhs” was directed by Coodie & Chike, the same directors who produced Mr. West’s first music video for the song “Through the Wire.” It spans more than 20 years, chronicling Mr. West’s rise as a young producer in the late 1990s and ending in 2020 with the rapper’s short-lived campaign for president.  The sec...

Bob Saget’s family files lawsuit to block release of investigation findings

The family of actor Bob Saget is filing a lawsuit against the sheriff’s office and the coroner in Orange County, Florida, to prevent the release of photos pertaining to the investigation of his death. The suit claims that the records — which include photos, video recordings, audio and autopsy information — are “exempt from public disclosure” under state law. “Upon information and belief, some of these Records graphically depict Mr. Saget, his likeness or features, or parts of him, and were made by Defendants during Defendants’ investigations,” the lawsuit states. The sheriff’s office released a statement in response to the suit. “While we are sensitive to the family’s concerns about the right to privacy, that must be balanced with our commitment to transparency, compliance with the law, ...

Allison Gollust, Jeff Zucker’s paramour, resigns from CNN

Less than two weeks after CNN President Jeff Tucker resigned over an undisclosed affair with another CNN employee, the paramour is gone too. Allison Gollust has resigned, according to a memo from TimeWarner CEO Jason Kilar reported Tuesday by numerous news outlets. “Earlier today, Allison Gollust resigned from CNN following the conclusion of the Company’s investigation into issues associated with Chris Cuomo and former Governor Andrew Cuomo,” Mr. Killar wrote. He said the investigation “found violations of Company policies, including CNN’s News Standards and Practices” by Ms. Gollust, CNN’s executive vice president and chief marketing officer. Mr. Kilar, who soon will be leaving his post, acknowledged that “I realize this news is troubling, disappointing, and frankly, painful to read … t...
