A suspect was arrested in reference to threats made in opposition to state lawmakers who deliberate to attend Saturday’s “No Kings” protest on the Texas Capitol in Austin, based on the Texas Division of Public Security.

The arrest comes after DPS warned state legislators of a “credible threat” in opposition to them throughout Saturday’s “No Kings” protest on the state capitol constructing in downtown Austin.

The Texas State Capitol and grounds had been evacuated at 1 p.m. native time Saturday because of the menace and stay briefly closed. Texas DPS stated that the evacuation was out of an abundance of warning. No additional particulars had been offered. 

“Just today, a credible threat was made to possibly kill members of the Texas Legislature at the Capitol,” Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick stated in a put up on X. “Death threats are sadly a part of serving in public life today.” 

Patrick referred to as on the general public to stay cautious and to “heed the warning of the Texas DPS until the threat is no longer active.”

The “No Kings” protest on the Texas Capitol was scheduled to start at 5 p.m., based on the “No Kings” web site. 

Patrick highlighted the necessity to differentiate between acceptable discourse and illegal threats.

“There’s a difference between free speech complaints, which we welcome, and making death threats,” Patrick stated in his assertion. “The latter can be a crime.”

Minnesota lawmakers focused

The bulletin to legislators additionally talked about the focused assaults in opposition to two lawmakers in Minnesota. State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband had been killed, and state Sen. John Hoffman and his spouse had been wounded in politically-motivated shootings in a single day, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz stated Saturday morning.

“Currently, it seems to be an isolated incident. However, we’re always concerned about copycats and those who this attack might inspire. Your safety is our top priority, and we are taking all necessary precautions to address any potential threats,” the bulletin stated.

“What happened today in Minnesota was an absolute criminal act and a tragic loss of life,” Patrick stated in his assertion. “Our prayers go out to those in Minnesota.”

In the meantime, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s press secretary Andrew Mahaleris launched an announcement, saying, “The Governor and First Lady fully condemn the heinous acts of violence in Minnesota and are praying for the Hortman and Hoffman families during this difficult time. State officials should be able to do their duty free from political intimidation.”
