Sharks apologize for ‘offensively worded message’ supportive of ICE on scoreboard

SAN JOSE – On an evening meant to rejoice their dedication to the native Hispanic neighborhood, the San Jose Sharks inadvertently displayed what seemed to be a message supportive of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s deportation efforts on SAP Middle’s center-hung scoreboard in the course of the crew’s recreation Saturday night time towards the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In the course of the recreation’s first intermission, the scoreboard displayed a message that learn, “SJ Sharks fans love ICE. Get ‘em boyz.”

Messages despatched in by followers to be displayed are sometimes supportive of the crew or meant to want somebody a cheerful birthday or anniversary.

The Sharks later issued a press release apologizing for the message, which was shared extensively on social media.

“During the first intermission of tonight’s game, an offensively worded message which had been externally submitted was inadvertently displayed on the in-arena scoreboard,” the assertion mentioned. “Sharks Sports activities & Leisure deeply regrets that this message, which doesn’t meet our group’s values, was not detected throughout our customary evaluate course of.

“The Sharks organization sincerely apologizes for this oversight, and we are actively working to determine the origin of the message.”

The Sharks on Saturday hosted their ninth annual Los Tiburones recreation, which, based on the crew’s web site, is “a celebration of the team’s commitment to the Bay Area’s vibrant Hispanic community.”

Responding to a number of fan complaints on social media platform X, Sharks crew president Jonathan Becher posted, “Disappointing that this slipped through our internal controls, but even more disappointing that a fan somehow thinks this is acceptable,” and likewise added, “Definitely NEVER appropriate and completely not consistent with Teal Together.”
