Oakland postal employee sentenced for stealing mail, consuming on the job

OAKLAND — A Bay Space man has been sentenced to supervised launch for stealing mail when he labored as a postal employee right here, in accordance with court docket information.

Timothy Evans pleaded responsible to mail theft by an worker, and was sentenced in August by U.S. District Decide Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers to a three-year supervised launch time period. He was a mail provider from 2019 to 2023, when he was caught on surveillance cameras consuming on the job and rifling via packages, court docket information present.

A prosecution sentencing memo says the stolen mail included money and checks, and provides that “in addition to stealing and destroying mail on many occasions, Evans was observed drinking alcohol and sleeping in his postal truck while on duty.”

Evans’ lawyer, Assistant Federal Public Defender Joyce Leavitt, stated in court docket filings that the COVID-19 pandemic modified all the pieces for Evans, who discovered himself in a tense job at an understaffed workplace.

“Mr. Evans also was distressed by financial pressures at the time, and turned to alcohol and other maladaptive coping strategies in an attempt to handle the pressures and stressors in his life. These coping strategies directly contributed to his commission of the offense,” Leavitt stated, including that Evans has since sought out rehabilitation.
