SPRINGFIELD, Sick. (AP) — The U.S. Justice Division is demanding information associated to the capturing of an Illinois lady who was killed in her residence by a sheriff’s deputy because it investigates how native authorities deal with Black residents and folks with behavioral disabilities.

The federal government made a listing of calls for in dozens of classes in a letter to the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Workplace, dated Thursday.

“The Sheriff’s Office, along with involved county agencies, has engaged in discussions and pledged full cooperation with the Department of Justice in its review,” Sheriff Paula Crouch stated Friday.

Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old Black lady, was killed in July when deputies responded to a name a couple of attainable prowler at her residence in Springfield, Illinois. She was shot 3 times throughout a confrontation with an officer.

Sean Grayson, who’s white, was fired. He’s charged with homicide and different crimes and has pleaded not responsible.

The Justice Division desires to know if the sheriff’s workplace has methods when responding to folks in “behavioral health crises,” amongst many different requests.

“The incident raises serious concerns about … interactions with Black people and people with behavioral health disabilities,” the federal government stated.

Andy Van Meter, chairman of the Sangamon County Board, stated the Justice Division’s assessment is a crucial step in strengthening the general public’s belief within the sheriff’s workplace.
