Brazil police: Bolsonaro participated in 2022 coup plot

SAO PAULO — Brazil’s former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro was totally conscious of and actively participated in a coup plot to stay in workplace after his defeat within the 2022 election, in keeping with a Federal Police report unsealed Tuesday.

Brazil’s Federal Police final Thursday formally accused Bolsonaro and 36 different folks of trying a coup. They despatched their almost 900-page report back to the Supreme Court docket, which lifted the seal on Tuesday.

“The evidence collected throughout the investigation shows unequivocally that then-President Jair Messias Bolsonaro planned, acted and was directly and effectively aware of the actions of the criminal organization aiming to launch a coup d’etat and eliminate the democratic rule of law, which did not take place due to reasons unrelated to his desire,” the doc stated.

At one other level, it says: “Bolsonaro had full awareness and active participation.”

The police report stated the coup was not carried out as a result of resistance from then-army commander Marco Antônio Freire Gomes and the vast majority of the military’s excessive command.

Bolsonaro has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing or consciousness of any plot to maintain him in energy or oust his leftist rival and successor, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The highest court docket has handed the report on to Prosecutor-Basic Paulo Gonet. He’ll resolve whether or not to formally cost Bolsonaro and put him on trial, or toss the investigation.
