Assata Shakur, a Black Liberation Military member who was convicted of murdering a state trooper in 1973 and lived in Cuba for many years, has died, authorities stated Friday.

She was charged with a number of crimes within the early Nineteen Seventies, together with a financial institution theft. In 1973, she was concerned in a shootout on the New Jersey Turnpike. The incident left state trooper Werner Foerster and Black Liberation Military member Zayd Malik Shakur lifeless. Assata Shakur was wounded within the incident. She was arrested and convicted of murdering Foerster, in addition to seven different felony costs associated to the taking pictures. She was sentenced to life in jail. 

In 1979, Shakur escaped the Clinton Correctional Facility for Ladies in New Jersey. Miller stated the escape, which noticed two males smuggled into the jail to take guards hostage and break her out, was “incredibly daring.” In 1984, she was smuggled to Mexico, Miller stated, then transported to Cuba, the place she was granted political asylum by the Castro authorities. 

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and State Police Superintendent Col. Patrick Callahan stated in a press release Friday, “For years, we have worked with the State Department to bring Chesimard back to New Jersey, so she could face justice for the cold-blooded murder of an American hero. Sadly, it appears she has passed without being held fully accountable for her heinous crimes.”

Shakur lived overtly in Cuba, publishing an autobiography in 1987. Miller stated she taught at Cuban universities. In 2013, she was positioned on the FBI’s Most Needed terrorist checklist, turning into the primary lady to be added. The reward for her seize was $2 million, however she was largely shielded from extradition to the U.S., Miller stated. 

Shakur was the step-aunt and godmother of slain rapper Tupac Shakur.
