Catastrophe Preparedness Day open to all Bay Space residents

If this week’s earthquake in Russia and resultant West Coast tsunami warnings elevated your consciousness of potential disasters, head to San Mateo on Saturday,  Aug. 2, for a refresher course on what to do when the sudden occurs.

The county’s twenty first annual Catastrophe Preparedness Day, a family-friendly occasion that’s open to all Bay Space residents, will provide hands-on coaching, workshops on CPR and emergency abilities, shows by native emergency responders and actions for youths.

The occasion will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the San Mateo County Occasion Heart, 1346 Saratoga Drive, San Mateo. Admission and parking are free, and no registration is required.

“Just look around the nation: catastrophic flooding in the Midwest and South, heat waves in the North, fires burning in the West,” stated David Canepa, president of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, in an occasion announcement. “A disaster can strike at any time, anywhere, and now is the time to get prepared by building your knowledge, learning key skills and developing a plan.”

Representatives of Cal Fireplace and native hearth departments, the Purple Cross and nonprofits such because the Heart for Independence for People with Disabilities can be available to supply steering.

Attendees can discover ways to create a household emergency plan, pack a go bag, take house emergency provides, join emergency alerts (in English, Spanish or Mandarin) and extra.

Youngsters will get an opportunity to fulfill search-and-rescue horses, attend storytime with a firefighter and climb aboard hearth engines and different autos, stated Dr. Shruti Dhapodkar, director of the county’s Division of Emergency Administration.
