OAKLAND – A whole bunch of individuals gathered Tuesday night time in East Oakland to protest escalating immigration enforcement efforts throughout the state in addition to the Trump administration’s current deployment of Nationwide Guard troops and Marines to Los Angeles.

“We are concerned that what happened in LA is going to happen here,” mentioned Pastor Todd Benson, govt director of Religion in Motion East Bay, which helped manage the interfaith vigil at Fruitvale Plaza.

Benson was referring to the Trump administration’s mobilization of troops amid giant demonstrations which have damaged out in protest of immigration enforcement efforts.

“There’s no need to call up the National Guard or the Marines,” Benson mentioned. “He (President Donald Trump) is doing this because he thinks it benefits him, but it harms so many people.”

California Lawyer Basic Rob Bonta has filed a lawsuit to overturn Trump’s order federalizing Nationwide Guard troops. On Tuesday, a U.S. District Courtroom choose denied a request for a brief restraining order and as an alternative set a listening to for Thursday.

In a speech on the vigil, Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee mentioned town is working with its emergency response groups to make sure individuals’s proper to peacefully protest is protected. She additionally mentioned town “remains committed to protecting our immigrant neighbors.”

“An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us,” Lee mentioned.

Oakland resident Jovanna Diaz cited her father as the explanation for attending the vigil. He was deported in 2006 after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement brokers raided his office, Diaz mentioned, including that he died in Mexico earlier than she may see him once more.

“These are things that are not thought about when they break families,” Diaz mentioned of ICE. “I just want to make my dad proud and use my voice for him and for all of our people.”
