OAKLAND — The Oakland Police Division is investigating whether or not considered one of its officers started pursuing a automobile shortly earlier than it barreled right into a pole early Monday morning off Worldwide Boulevard.

Oakland police Chief Floyd Mitchell on Tuesday stated the crash occurred inside “a matter of seconds” after considered one of his officers turned on their patrol cruiser’s lights whereas behind the automobile. He stated it’s nonetheless unclear whether or not the officer had began pursuing the car previous to the crash, and whether or not that pursuit would have adopted the division’s strict insurance policies on chases.

“I want everyone in this room and in our community to rest assured that the Oakland Police Department will conduct a complete and thorough investigation into this incident,” Mitchell stated at a press convention Tuesday night. “All the proper levers were pulled by our on scene supervisors and command staff to ensure that a complete and transparent investigation will be conducted in accordance with department policy.”

The crash occurred at about 4 a.m. Monday in East Oakland, after an officer noticed a motorist going west on Worldwide Boulevard close to Seminary Avenue at an “extremely high rate of speed,” Mitchell stated. The officer, who was within the eastbound lanes of Worldwide, made a U-turn and flipped on the car’s lights simply earlier than the dashing motorist crashed right into a pole at 54th Avenue, the chief stated. Pictures of the wreck confirmed the car wrapped across the pole.

The division’s on-duty watch commander “initiated the required investigative call outs” by each the OPD’s Prison Investigations Division and its Inner Affairs Bureau, Mitchell stated, “in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures.”

“We want to err on the side of caution to make sure we are looking at everything from a factual basis,” Mitchell stated.

The officer who was tailing the motorist stays on responsibility, the chief stated.

The driving force was taken to a hospital in essential situation, and remained “stable” on Tuesday night, Mitchell stated. Little is understood about that individual, Mitchell stated, together with why they have been touring so quick.

OPD’s pursuit coverage is stricter than most Bay Space police businesses, with officers solely allowed to chase a motorist if there’s affordable suspicion they’ve dedicated a violent crime.

One notable pursuit in 2022 left 28-year-old Lolomanaia Soakai, of Hayward, lifeless after he was hit by a car fleeing Oakland police in an unauthorized pursuit. His dying led his household to file a lawsuit in opposition to town claiming two officers left the scene with out alerting emergency medical companies or documenting the “ghost chase,” which is a time period for unauthorized chases the place police don’t activate a patrol automobile’s sirens or lights, as a way to keep away from scrutiny.
