California is stripping the phrase “squaw” – a derogatory time period for Indigenous girls – from dozens of place names throughout 15 counties, state companies lately introduced.

The up to date place names are anticipated to go in impact by January 1, 2025. The upcoming adjustments are a part of nationwide efforts to look at and exchange derogatory phrases on geographic options.

“The names we give to places in California reflect our shared history and culture. These place names should never insult communities or perpetuate discrimination,” Wade Crowfoot, the CNRA’s secretary, mentioned within the launch.
