A strong 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck off northern Japan on Monday, triggering a tsunami of as much as 15 inches in coastal communities within the area, the Japanese Meteorological Company stated.

The company stated the quake struck simply east of Aomori, the northernmost prefecture of Japan’s important Honshu island, and simply south of Hokkaido island. It stated a tsunami of 40 centimeters (about 15.75 inches) struck the Hokkaido prefecture city of Urakawa and the Aomori prefecture port of Mutsu Ogawara.

A number of individuals had been injured at a lodge within the Aomori city of Hachinohe, public broadcaster NHK reported.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, in short feedback to reporters, stated the federal government arrange an emergency activity power to urgently assess the extent of harm. “We are putting people’s lives first and doing everything we can,” she stated.

Nuclear energy vegetation within the area had been conducting security checks, NHK reported.

The U.S. Nationwide Tsunami Warning Heart stated there was no tsunami hazard for the U.S. West Coast, Canada’s British Columbia or Alaska.
