‘Brazen’ heist: 1,000-plus artifacts swiped from Oakland museum

OAKLAND — At the least one particular person stole greater than 1,000 objects from a storage facility containing artifacts belonging to the Oakland Museum of California earlier this month, authorities stated Wednesday.

Police and the FBI had been investigating the heist, which occurred simply earlier than 3:30 a.m. on Oct. 15 on the facility. Police didn’t give a location for that facility.

In an announcement, Oakland police stated they might be coping with one suspect or many. The objects included Native American baskets, jewellery and different unspecified artifacts.

“The theft that occurred represents a brazen act that robs the public of our state’s cultural heritage,” Oakland Museum of California Government Director and CEO Lori Fogarty stated in an announcement. “Most of these objects have been given to the Museum by generous donors.”

Fogarty stated museum officers are working with the FBI and police detectives “to see that those objects are returned.”

Police urged anybody with data to contact the Oakland Police Division housebreaking part at 510-238-3951 or the FBI Artwork Crime Workforce at suggestions.fbi.gov or 1-800-225-5324.
