Water companies Anglian and South West fined mixed £87m for sewage failures | Cash Information

Two water firms have been fined a mixed £86.8m over sewage-related failures.

Trade watchdog Ofwat – itself set to be scrapped as a part of a shake-up of oversight within the sector – mentioned Anglian Water and its shareholders confronted a redress bundle of £62.8m.

The penalty for South West Water stood at £24m.

The pair are the most recent companies to face monetary penalties for breaching obligations within the operation of their wastewater remedy works and networks.

Lynn Parker, senior director for enforcement at Ofwat, mentioned: “Our investigations discovered failures in how Anglian Water and South West Water have operated and maintained their sewage works and networks, which has resulted in extreme spills from storm overflows.

“These are severe breaches and are unacceptable.

“We perceive that the general public desires to see transformative change.

“That’s the reason we’re prioritising this sector-wide investigation, which is holding wastewater firms to account for recognized failures.

“We are pleased both companies have accepted that they got things wrong and are now focusing on putting that right, and taking action to come back into compliance.”
