Social-media company Reddit said Wednesday that it filed confidentially for an initial public offering.

Now comes the hard work: Investment bankers have to pore over its financial statements, find comparable enterprises for a valuation benchmark and then engage in the delicate process of sounding out big investors to gauge demand and set the IPO price.
