U.S. egg costs hit document as retailers hold prices excessive on provide fears

By Ilena Peng | Bloomberg

Egg costs hit one other recent document for shoppers in March as retailers, fearing future provide shocks, hold costs excessive.

Client costs for eggs rose 5.6% in March from February to $6.227 a dozen, and doubled from the year-earlier stage, in keeping with the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The rise comes at the same time as costs for wholesalers that offer grocery shops have dropped steeply.

Business consultants had anticipated costs for eggs on grocery cabinets to fall, as decrease demand and abating fowl flu outbreaks cooled costs. Wholesale egg costs for giant white shell eggs pulled again in March to $3 a dozen, down from a document above $8 a dozen in February. However shoppers aren’t seeing any of that decline but.

Costs “can go up quickly, but if supply assurance is limited, those retail outlets may be reluctant to bring prices back down, for fear that they get caught behind the market again,” in keeping with Brian Earnest, the lead animal protein economist at CoBank. “It can be really cumbersome to keep changing shelf tags.”

Buyers are more likely to see costs between $2 to $6 a dozen for the subsequent few months as provides get better, although retail costs “can be really difficult to predict” particularly with unstable provides, Earnest mentioned.

The danger of additional fowl flu outbreaks nonetheless stays, and costs may be supported by Easter on April 20, a interval that usually sees elevated demand as shoppers purchase eggs to dye, hunt and eat.
