Police in Philadelphia are searching for a person posing as an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who robbed an auto restore store. The crime is the most recent in a string of incidents in a number of cities involving individuals posing as ICE personnel with the intention to commit crimes.

Fox 29 reported on Monday that in line with police, the person posed as an officer whereas carrying a tactical vest and a shirt labeled “security.” He claimed to be an ICE agent and zip tied the wrists of the cashier, a lady initially from the Dominican Republic who has been a authorized U.S. resident for over 18 years.

The person then stole $1,000 from the cash-only enterprise.

In February, two males in South Carolina have been arrested and accused of impersonating ICE officers. They accosted a Latino man driving a pickup truck and instructed him they have been going to ship him again to Mexico.

Equally, a Florida man harassed two Latino migrants in April and falsely claimed he was an ICE officer. The person demanded that the migrants show their immigration standing and threatened to deport them. Different ICE impersonation incidents have occurred in Florida, California, and at Philadelphia’s Temple College.

The impersonation scheme has turn into sufficient of an issue that California Legal professional Common Rob Bonta issued a warning to the general public.

“We have received reports of individuals looking to take advantage of the fear and uncertainty created by President Trump’s inhumane mass deportation policies,” Bonta mentioned in a March press launch. “Let me be clear: If you seek to scam or otherwise take advantage of California’s immigrant communities, you will be held accountable.”

The crimes have occurred amidst a push by President Donald Trump and key members of his group like adviser Stephen Miller, architect of Trump’s racist anti-immigration insurance policies, for elevated immigration arrests and deportation. ICE brokers, typically with their faces obscured, have adopted orders and kidnapped individuals off the streets with out figuring out themselves and detained and deported group members.

Regardless of public outcry in regards to the thuggish ways, Republican leaders like Home Speaker Mike Johnson have expressed help for the masked abductions. Trump has even complained about protesters carrying masks and demanded they be arrested whereas backing masked ICE brokers.

The heavy-handed method and the push to have extra raids is what led to the continued protests in Los Angeles that are actually spreading to different cities.

Felony components are profiting from Trump’s embrace of those authoritarian strategies in one more method that crime is enabled by Trump’s actions.

As a substitute of directing the federal government to combat crime in a standard method, Trump has pushed the false narrative that immigrant crime is extra of an issue than homegrown threats. This pivot has offered the pretext ICE cosplayers have to rob extra auto restore outlets, harass harmless individuals, and proceed terrorizing communities.
