The S&P 500 hovered around the flatline Tuesday as gains by cyclical stocks balanced against losses in technology shares.

The broad U.S. stock index was recently up less than 0.1%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.5%, or about 170 points. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite retreated 0.6% after losing more than 1% Monday.
