Senate Republicans killed the filibuster. Good

Senate Republicans voted Wednesday evening to strip California of its proper to set its personal auto-emissions requirements, a transfer that blocked automobile requirements that may section out gas-powered automobiles. It’s an outrageous transfer—hostile to local weather motion, defiant of states’ rights, and in direct defiance of the Senate parliamentarian, the nonpartisan advisor to the chamber on procedural points, who dominated it out of order. It will likely be tied up within the courts for years.

However right here’s simply as huge of a narrative: Republicans simply gutted the filibuster to get their approach. And that’s a superb factor.

Every day Kos has lengthy advocated for the filibuster’s demise. Requiring 60 votes to cross laws isn’t simply anti-democratic—it’s a rigged sport that hurts Democrats way over Republicans. The Senate already provides disproportionate energy to small, conservative states. Layering a supermajority requirement on high of that? It’s absurd.

Automobiles make their approach westbound on Interstate 80 throughout the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

Wyoming, with fewer than 600,000 residents, will get the identical variety of senators as California, with 40 million. In reality, there are 119 counties within the U.S. with bigger populations than Wyoming.  That’s dangerous sufficient.

However get this: The purple states of Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, West Virginia, and Wyoming—with a mixed inhabitants of 40 million—get 30 senators. California will get two.

That is the system Democrats are anticipated to navigate with a 60-vote threshold? Come on.

Worse, that very same minority can then flip round and name the Senate a “do-nothing” chamber, whereas they’re those obstructing progress. Most voters don’t even perceive the filibuster, as a result of it makes no rattling sense. Republicans exploit that confusion. Democrats endure the results.

The good transfer has at all times been to kill the filibuster. Sure, it means Republicans can cross dangerous legal guidelines once they’re in cost, however that’s democracy. Let the general public see what occurs once they put the GOP in energy. Let Democrats supply a transparent different. No extra hiding behind obscure guidelines, no extra excuses.

And let’s be trustworthy: Republicans have by no means revered the filibuster. They’ve carved out exceptions every time it fits their agenda. So why the hell are Democrats nonetheless clinging to this nonsense?

Sufficient is sufficient.

Even some Democrats are waking up: The New York Instances quoted Senate Minority Chief Chuck Schumer warning, “Republicans today cross a point of no return for the Senate, expanding what a party can do with a majority threshold. Republicans should tread very carefully today. What goes around comes around.”

California Sen. Alex Padilla didn’t maintain again both. He promised that subsequent time Democrats are in energy, “all bets are off,” and added:“Think mining permits. Think fossil fuel project approvals. Think LNG export licenses or offshore leases, I.R.S. tax policies, foreign policy, every Project 2025 or DOGE disruption. Every agency action that Democrats don’t like, whether it is a rule or not and no matter how much time has passed, would be fair game.”

Don’t threaten me with a superb time, Alex!

If Republicans need to kill the filibuster, allow them to. Let voters see precisely what GOP rule seems to be like. After which once we return to energy, we are able to enact an precise agenda with out the filibuster bullshit slowing us down.
