A person accused of owing a cruise line almost $17,000 in playing debt allegedly jumped off a ship to keep away from paying. 

Jey Gonzalez-Diaz, who was booked beneath the passenger title of “Jeremy Diaz,” was detained by Customs and Border Safety (CBP) officers round 9:45 a.m. Sunday close to the Port of San Juan, after he allegedly jumped off Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas throughout disembarkation, in response to a felony grievance.

Safety footage exhibits Gonzalez-Diaz being dropped at shore by two passing Jet Skis. 

CBP officers mentioned they discovered $14,600 in U.S. forex, one backpack, one purse, two cellular gadgets and 5 identification paperwork in Gonzalez-Diaz’s possession.

When requested why he jumped off the ship, he allegedly instructed officers in Spanish, that he “did not want to report the currency on his possession because he thought he was going to be taxed duties for bring in the currency,” the grievance states.

The cruise line instructed investigators that Gonzalez-Diaz “had a $16,710.24 debt” that “was almost exclusively associated to Casino and Gaming expenses.”

The cruise left the Port of San Juan on August 31 earlier than returning on September 7. 

In response to the courtroom submitting, when Gonzalez-Diaz was requested by Homeland Safety Investigations (HSI) brokers for his full title, he mentioned, “If you guys were good at your job, you would know that.” He then refused to talk with HSI brokers additional, prosecutors mentioned.

Three of the identification paperwork that officers recovered had the title “Jeremy Diaz,” which the suspect later instructed investigators was his brother’s title. Two further paperwork had the title “Jey Xander Omar Gonzalez Diaz.”

Gonzalez-Diaz’s brother has been in federal custody since January 2025 on the Metropolitan Detention Heart Guaynabo, authorities mentioned.

Gonzalez-Diaz faces fines as much as $250,000, as much as 5 years in jail or each.

When contacted by FOX Enterprise, a Royal Caribbean spokesperson mentioned that because of the matter being a part of an ongoing investigation, they “are working with authorities and don’t have any more information to share.”
