President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday granted sanction to prosecute RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav in reference to a cash laundering case linked to the alleged land-for-jobs rip-off in Indian Railways.

The alleged rip-off befell throughout Yadav’s tenure as Union Railway Minister and concerned accepting land from unemployed youths in change for presidency jobs.

Officers stated the President’s approval was given as required beneath Part 197(1) of the Felony Process Code (CrPC), now listed as Part 218 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.

In its chargesheet filed final August, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had named 76-year-old former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, his son and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, together with different relations.

Earlier, in January 2024, the ED had filed its first chargesheet within the case in opposition to Amit Katyal, an alleged affiliate of the Prasad household, together with Lalu’s spouse and former Bihar CM Rabri Devi, MP daughter Misa Bharti, daughter Hema Yadav, and two corporations—A Ok Infosystems Non-public Restricted and A B Exports Pvt. Ltd.

What Is Land-for-Jobs Rip-off?

The case stems from a CBI FIR which alleges that Lalu Prasad Yadav, as Railway Minister between 2004 and 2009 in the course of the UPA authorities, was concerned in corruption whereas appointing Group D substitute workers in Indian Railways.

In accordance with the FIR, candidates or their households had been allegedly requested to switch land as a bribe in change for jobs. These land parcels had been then registered—both straight or not directly—within the names of Lalu Yadav’s relations.
