SAN PABLO – For the primary time in a very long time, Salesian was not the perfect group on the ground.

Regardless of extra power and made photographs within the second half, the Satisfaction couldn’t overcome a 25-point sport from St. Joseph’s-Santa Maria ahead Tounde Yessoufou and fell 76-67 on Saturday on the Crush within the Valley showcase at Contra Costa Faculty.

Elias Obenyah led Salesian with 20 factors, six rebounds, two assists and 4 steals. Carlton Perrilliat had 19 factors and three rebounds.

St. Joseph’s guard Julius Value scored 16 factors, grabbed 5 rebounds and dished out seven assists. Gunner Morinini added 14 factors.

“We’re just not good enough yet,” Salesian coach Invoice Mellis stated. “We still got some work to do and they were just better than us. We didn’t play very good defense, we didn’t rebound very well, we didn’t make very many shots. But that had a lot more to do with them, probably than anything.

“We lost to a good team.”

A plethora of turnovers from Salesian within the first half gave St. Joseph’s a snug lead after two quarters.

The Knights took a seven-point lead after the primary quarter and grew that benefit into the second. A straightforward layup from Julius Value gave St. Joseph’s a 26-14 lead early within the second. Salesian ended the second quarter sturdy to solely go down 9 on the half.

Salesian got here out of the halftime break fired up, occurring a 12-3 run to chop the St. Joseph’s result in simply two factors early within the third. Nevertheless it was all St. Joseph’s from there.

The Knights took an eight-point lead into halftime and began the fourth quarter on a 11-4 run, fueled by three 3-pointers from Morinini.

A Value 3-pointer with underneath three minutes to go within the sport gave the Santa Maria college a 15-point lead – its largest of the sport – and closed the door on any Salesian comeback

Regardless of the comfy win, Yessoufou stated he revered Salesian competed all night time.

“They share the ball and play together,” Yessoufou, a Baylor commit, stated. “You know, they went to the state championship for a reason.  We knew coming in it wouldn’t be an easy game.”

Mellis knew Yessoufou would get his factors, however stated the gameplan was to cease the opposite 4 gamers on the court docket – one thing the Satisfaction struggled with all night time.

“We weren’t going to stop him,” Mellis stated. “It was more about stopping the other guys and we didn’t do that. We just needed to do a better job on those guys.”

There’s nonetheless uncertainty as to whether or not St. Joseph’s will probably be put within the northern or southern part of the state playoff brackets, however each groups would welcome one other rematch down the road.

“I would play against anyone, anytime and any day,” Yessoufou stated a few attainable rematch within the NorCal playoffs. “For me it’s about playing the best competition.”

“Hopefully we see them down the road,” Mellis stated. “We’re gonna have to perform well in NCS and get ourselves into the open in NorCal to see them again. But that’s where we want to be, and that’s the tournament that we strive to be in. If we’re going to get there, we have to play better than what we played tonight and against teams of similar calibers.”
