‘Martez stabbed me’: Oakland man to serve 12 years in jail for killing good friend

OAKLAND — In a plea cope with prosecutors, a person has agreed to serve a 12-year jail time period for stabbing his good friend to demise in 2020, information present.

Martez Penn, 23, pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter within the killing of 19-year-old Jalain Dickson. As a part of the deal, prosecutors agreed to dismiss a homicide cost towards Penn.

Dickson was stabbed to demise in March 2020, on the 2000 block of sixty fourth Avenue in Oakland. In keeping with testimony at his 2023 preliminary listening to, he was concerned in a dispute with neighbors over his canine, King, and bought mad at Penn when Penn picked up the animal.

In an “extraordinarily polite” police interview, Penn would later declare that Dickson punched him first and threatened him with a knife, and that he stabbed his good friend in self-defense, in keeping with police testimony. He later mentioned throughout the interview that he stabbed Dickson as a result of he felt “embarrassed” that Dickson hit him in entrance of the household Dickson had been arguing with.

That very same day, officers arrested Penn, who was skateboarding, a brief distance from the crime scene, and located two knives on him. He has been in jail ever since, court docket information present.

On the preliminary listening to, Dickson’s mom testified that she heard a commotion outdoors her house and left her condominium to see what was happening. She was met with a horrifying sight: her son, bleeding and mortally wounded. She requested him what was happening.

“Martez stabbed me,” Dickson advised her, the lady testified.
