Common synthetic intelligence (AI) chatbot platform Character.ai, extensively used for role-playing and inventive storytelling with digital characters, introduced Wednesday that customers below 18 will not be capable of interact in open-ended conversations with its digital companions beginning Nov. 24.

The transfer follows months of authorized scrutiny and a 2024 lawsuit alleging that the corporate’s chatbots contributed to the dying of a teenage boy in Orlando. In accordance with the federal wrongful dying lawsuit, 14-year-old Sewell Setzer III more and more remoted himself from real-life interactions and engaged in extremely sexualized conversations with the bot earlier than his dying.

Character.ai emphasised that the modifications are a part of its ongoing effort to steadiness creativity with group security.

“We’re working to keep our community safe, especially our teen users,” the corporate added. “It has always been our goal to provide an engaging space that fosters creativity while maintaining a safe environment for our entire community.”
