Kamala Harris, the great unifier

OPINION:

Vice President Kamala Harris has done something special in our political environment: She’s brought both sides together. Neither the Republicans nor the Democrats like her.

From the start of the Biden administration, most expected Ms. Harris to last longer than President Biden as an occupant in the White House, but that presumption is now on shaky ground.

A few days ago, CNN ran with a story calling into serious question not just Ms. Harris’ competence, but the stability of her office. The headline is something Al Capone would have been proud of when it comes to annihilating an opponent: “Exasperation and dysfunction: inside Kamala Harris‘s frustrating start as vice president.”

The report starts with a confession revealing, in part, on whom they relied for the upcoming attack by noting, “worn out by what they see as entrenched dysfunction and lack of focus, key West Wing aides have largely thrown up their hands at Vice President Kamala Harris and her staff….”

CNN, a stenography service for the Democrats and the White House, would never have run with a story like this without the approval of the president’s office. It was a very public, dramatic and inglorious throwing of the vice president under a bus with all hallmarks of the trolls and fools running the dumpster fire known as the Biden administration.

This turn of events should disabuse everyone of the speculative notion that when Mr. Biden would depart the White House, Ms. Harris would ascend. If that was the original plan, it appears they are now preparing for Plan B.

The details in the CNN hit piece reflect bitterness, paranoia and resentment in the White House in general. It was also inevitable. The Democrats cobbled together a team of mascots for the White House without regard for competence and seriousness. Mr. Biden is obviously not running that show, and Ms. Harris is a creature of that same shallow disastrous plot-making.

Complaints and smears fly back and forth in the story. The primary accusation from Ms. Harris’ camp is that Mr. Biden’s office is racist and sexist. In this case, since they are dealing with fellow Democrats, she is likely correct.

And yet, the Biden gang’s idiocy could have been an opportunity for Ms. Harris to show the country that she could and should be the president instead. Alas, her public disasters have been of her own making and reveal a woman who has earned being underwater at work and in the polls. There’s no big ship door for her to float on as this ship sinks.

Most recently, the vice president’s trip to France was supposed to highlight her leadership with a trusted ally in the midst of COVID-19 and the Biden administration’s angering of France over a nuclear submarine deal with Australia.

Ms. Harris did stun the world on that trip, but not in the way she had probably hoped.

During a tour of the Institute Pasteur science lab, Ms. Harris seemed to be mocking the French. Twice she bizarrely launched into a fake French accent evoking for many our favorite French cartoon skunk Pepe Le Pew and for some the character of Tattoo from the 1970s television show “Fantasy Island.”

During another public event, she assured the French, “We must together, work together. To see where we are. Where we are headed, where we are going, and our vision for where we should be. But also see it as a moment to, yes, together, address the challenges. And to work on the opportunities that are presented by this moment.”

Okey-dokey.

Throughout the debacle of the Biden show, his sinking poll numbers reflect an electorate that’s had enough. What you don’t hear as much about is that Ms. Harris’ approval rating is even lower, revealing a remarkable depth of antipathy toward her from voters. A USA Today/Suffolk University poll has her with a remarkable 28% approval rating. Politico noted this is even worse than “Vice President Dick Cheney, who was previously known as the least popular vice president in modern American history.”

With growing discontent in the country, disastrous poll numbers, and the signal of the Virginia election, Democratic Party insiders are saying leadership is growing more concerned about retaining the White House in 2024 if Ms. Harris is the presumed inheritor of the office.

The CNN story could indicate the Biden gang has decided tossing her now is their move, allowing some other incompetent shmuck from within their ranks to be saddled with the catastrophe of the Biden administration.

To that point, on Tuesday night Chad Pergram, Fox News’ Capitol Hill correspondent, reported there was “conjecture about the future of Vice President Harris,” and that he heard from someone familiar with events on the Hill who suggested, “I familiarize myself with the process to confirm a vacancy for the vice president in the Senate and in the House. To be clear, this is not to say something is afoot here….”

While that turn of events would be unusual, it’s certainly not as strange as the fact that Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris got elected in the first place. It is also a reminder that none of it will end well when you fake your way into a job and lie your way through the process.
