Huge Three automakers get 1-month tariff exemption, White Home says

President Donald Trump granted Stellantis, Ford and Normal Motors a one-month tariff exemption, the White Home mentioned Wednesday.

The “Big Three” automakers are getting a one-month exemption from the Trump administration’s tariffs that went into impact Monday, White Home press secretary Karoline Leavitt introduced Wednesday. 

“We spoke with the Big Three automakers,” Leavitt confirmed. “We are going to give a one-month exemption on any autos coming through USMCA [United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement].

“Reciprocal tariffs will nonetheless go into impact on April 2, however on the request of the businesses related to USMCA, the president is giving them an exemption for one month so they don’t seem to be at an financial drawback,” Leavitt said. 

She told reporters that Stellantis, Ford and General Motors were the companies Trump spoke with. 

“They requested the decision. They made the ask and the president is glad to do it,” Leavitt added. “It is a one-month exemption.”

In mid-February, Trump signed an govt order imposing reciprocal tariffs on U.S. buying and selling companions, successfully elevating duties on imports to match these levied on America’s exports.

The Trump administration goals to finish its commerce overview by April 1 and plans to focus on what it calls probably the most “egregious” points first, together with international locations with giant commerce surpluses with the U.S. and the best tariff charges on American items.  

The president’s tariffs would match different international locations’ greater tariff charges and purpose to counter different commerce obstacles like burdensome laws, value-added taxes, authorities subsidies and trade fee insurance policies and to barter with some international locations to scale back these obstacles.

Critics say the tariffs might increase costs for American customers. The Trump White Home sees tariffs as a software for leverage in financial and international coverage negotiations, and for bringing firms again to the U.S.
