Born on the island of St. Thomas in what was then the Danish West Indies (now the U.S. Virgin Islands) to French Jewish mother and father, Pissarro hung out in Caracas and La Guaira, Venezuela, earlier than settling in Paris in 1855. There, he turned acquainted with a gaggle of younger artists who have been difficult the standard modes of portray and would ultimately go on to delivery the Impressionist motion. A flexible artist, Pissarro embodied the position of insider, contributing to the institution of Impressionism as a coherent avant-garde phenomenon whereas sustaining his creative independence as he eschewed his friends’ alternative of upper-class subject material to depict scenes of the mundane. The Trustworthy Eye displays this dichotomy, whereas choices from Pissarro’s letters present insights into his creative course of and worldview extra broadly.

“Pissarro was a true architect of the impressionist movement. His colleague and friend Cezanne called him ‘the first impressionist.’ The only artist to present work at all eight Impressionist exhibitions in Paris, Pissarro was a defining figure whose oeuvre captured a changing society in the throes of industrialization, straddling the rural and urban in his depictions of daily life,” stated Clarisse Fava-Piz, Affiliate Curator of European and American Artwork earlier than 1900.

The exhibition traces 4 a long time of Pissarro’s profession, illustrating the evolution of his observe from his early years within the Caribbean and South America, to his time in Paris on the daybreak of the Impressionist motion, to his household life in Éragny, and his later years depicting the cities and harbors of northern France.
