The European Union will droop retaliatory tariffs on items from the US that had been scheduled to take impact on Monday. The EU hopes it could actually attain a commerce take care of the Trump administration by the tip of the month.

“This is now the time for negotiations,” European Fee President Ursula von der Leyen instructed reporters in Brussels on Sunday.

A day earlier, President Trump despatched a letter to the EU saying new 30% tariffs on items beginning Aug. 1. Within the letter, Mr. Trump mentioned the connection between the bloc and the U.S. has been “far from Reciprocal,” and that the U.S. commerce deficit was a nationwide safety risk.

“We have had years to discuss our Trading Relationship with The European Union, and have concluded that we must move away from these long-term, large, and persistent Trade Deficits, engendered by your Tariff, and Non-Tariff, Policies and Trade Barriers,” he wrote.

Mr. Trump despatched the same letter to Mexico.

The EU – the US’ greatest buying and selling associate and the world’s largest buying and selling bloc – had been scheduled to impose “countermeasures” beginning Monday at midnight Brussels time (6 p.m. EST). The EU negotiates commerce offers on behalf of its 27 member international locations.

Von der Leyen mentioned these countermeasures can be delayed till Aug. 1, and that Mr. Trump’s letter reveals ″that we’ve got till the primary of August″ to barter. European leaders have urged Mr. Trump and von der Leyen to offer negotiations extra time.

″We have now all the time been clear that we favor a negotiated answer,″ she mentioned. If they’ll’t attain a deal, she mentioned that ″we are going to proceed to organize countermeasures so we’re totally ready.″

Mr. Trump has mentioned his international tariffs would set the muse for reviving a U.S. economic system that he claims has been ripped off by different nations for many years. He was on an announcement blitz of new tariffs with allies and foes alike final week.
