Boeing is ready to put off 2,199 employees within the state of Washington within the coming months, with some dropping their jobs simply days earlier than Christmas.

The aviation firm notified the state of Washington of the cuts, in keeping with FOX 13 Seattle. One other 220 folks will lose their jobs in South Carolina, Reuters reported. The 2 states are the place Boeing builds business airliners.

The layoffs are a part of the debt-heavy U.S. planemaker’s plan to chop 17,000 jobs, or 10% of its international workforce, in keeping with a union official and federally required filings posted on Monday. Boeing workers in Oregon and Missouri are additionally set to be impacted, in keeping with Reuters, though the precise quantity was not shared. 

Based on Boeing, “only a very small number” of workers will lose their jobs in December, “while the majority will exit in mid-January.”

The aerospace large began telling affected U.S. employees on Wednesday that they’ll keep on Boeing’s payroll till Jan. 17 to adjust to federal necessities to inform workers at the very least 60 days previous to ending their employment.

The notices come as Boeing tries to restart manufacturing of its strongest-selling 737 MAX, after a weekslong strike by greater than 33,000 U.S. West Coast employees halted output of most of its business jets.

“As previously announced, we are adjusting our workforce levels to align with our financial reality and a more focused set of priorities. We are committed to ensuring our employees have support during this challenging time,” an announcement from Boeing to FOX Enterprise stated.

Boeing stated, “eligible employees will receive severance pay, career transition services, and subsidized health care benefits up to 3 months after exiting the company.”

Boeing shares gained 2.6% to shut at $143.87 on Monday.
