WWII pilot accounted for 82 years after being credited with saving airman’s life in lethal crash

A World Warfare II pilot who was remembered for serving to fellow servicemembers survive the aircraft crash that killed him has been accounted for, army officers mentioned this week. 

1st Lt. Charles W. McCook.

McCook’s stays weren’t recovered. He was finally listed as lacking in motion. In 1947, after World Warfare II ended, the American Grave Registration Service recovered 4 units of stays from a typical grave close to a village in Burma, the DPAA mentioned.

Locals mentioned the 4 units of stays, designated X-282A-D, had been from an “American crash,” the DPAA mentioned. However the stays weren’t recognized on the time. They had been interred as “Unknowns” on the Nationwide Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, or the Punchbowl, in Honolulu, Hawaii. McCook’s identify was listed on the Partitions of the Lacking on the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial within the Philippines. 

In January 2022, the DPAA disinterred all 4 units of stays and brought to the company’s laboratory. Dental, anthropological and isotope analyses had been carried out. Different army businesses used mitochondrial DNA evaluation and genome sequencing information to assist establish the stays. The processes allowed the DPAA to establish one of many units of stays as belonging to McCook. 

Now that McCook has been accounted for, a rosette has been positioned subsequent to his identify on the Partitions of the Lacking. He will likely be buried in his hometown in August 2025, the DPAA mentioned.
