The secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission Ashram in Gwalior, Swami Supradiptananda, turned a sufferer of what’s being described as Madhya Pradesh’s greatest “digital arrest” fraud. Over a interval of 26 days, he was just about held hostage via video calls and coerced into transferring Rs 2.52 crore to a number of financial institution accounts throughout the nation.

The fraud started on March 17, when the monk obtained a video name from an individual claiming to be a police officer from Nashik, Maharashtra.

The caller alleged that Swami Supradiptananda’s identify had surfaced in a cash laundering case involving businessman Naresh Goyal. 

Exploiting his belief and worry, the imposters satisfied him that he wanted to cooperate with their investigation or face authorized motion.

Based on police sources, the fraudsters demanded that the monk stay in fixed contact with them via video calls – a tactic now being known as a “digital arrest”. Throughout this time, he was systematically pressured into transferring funds in a number of instalments, believing that his cooperation would clear his identify.

The overall quantity transferred – Rs 2.52 crore – was despatched to 12 totally different financial institution accounts throughout India. The fraudsters even promised to return the complete quantity by April 15, claiming it was a part of a verification course of. Nevertheless, when the cash was not returned, Swami Supradiptananda lodged a proper grievance with Gwalior Superintendent of Police Dharamveer Singh.

ASP Niranjan Sharma confirmed the event. “A case has been registered at the Cyber Police Station. The victim received a call claiming to be from the Nashik Police. He was told his name had come up in a money laundering case. The fraudsters gained his trust, took his Aadhaar details, and gradually extorted about Rs 2.5 crore by intimidating him,” he mentioned.

The Police consider that this case may very well be half of a bigger interstate or worldwide racket, and haven’t dominated out the involvement of extra victims or accomplices.
