The tariff tit-for-tat between the U.S. and China escalated once more Wednesday, with President Donald Trump saying that he’s instantly elevating the tariffs on Chinese language items to 125% over Beijing’s “lack of respect” towards America, whereas pausing and reducing reciprocal tariffs on different nations.

“At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the U.S.A., and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable,” Trump posted on his Reality Social media platform.

Trump wrote that greater than 75 different nations have known as U.S. representatives to “negotiate a solution” to the themes relative to commerce, commerce limitations, tariffs, foreign money manipulation, and non-monetary tariffs. He added that these nations, “at my strong suggestion,” haven’t retaliated in any means towards America.

Trump wrote that his reciprocal tariffs on different nations can be paused for 90 days, throughout which the tariff fee can be 10%.

Trump’s transfer comes simply hours after China introduced it was rising its reciprocal tariff on U.S. items from 34% to 84%.

China’s escalation got here after Trump’s most up-to-date tariff enhance went into impact shortly after midnight Wednesday, bringing the overall U.S. tariff on Chinese language items to 104%.

Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick posted on X that the world – besides China – is able to work with Trump on commerce.

Amongst Trump’s tariffs that went into impact early Wednesday additionally included a 20% tariff on merchandise from the European Union, 24% on Japan and 25% on South Korea.

Earlier Wednesday, the European Union introduced the approval of retaliatory tariffs on $23 billion in U.S. items as “countermeasures” to Trump’s tariffs – a 20% levy on EU imports that he introduced final week – although it mentioned the 27-country bloc remained open to dropping the tariffs “should the US agree to a fair and balanced negotiated outcome.”
