Alphabet Inc.’s self-driving automobile agency, Waymo, mentioned it’ll start transporting passengers in a handful of cities close to its Mountain View, California, headquarters.

Waymo mentioned it is going to be providing rides to a choose group of residents earlier than increasing to extra riders in a 27-square-mile swath of Silicon Valley that features Mountain View, Los Altos, Palo Alto and components of Sunnyvale. The corporate added that it now delivers greater than 200,000 paid rides per week to prospects in its present markets, together with San Francisco and Los Angeles.

“Opening our fully autonomous ride-hailing service in Silicon Valley marks a special milestone in our Bay Area journey,” Waymo’s chief product officer, Saswat Panigrahi, mentioned in a press release Tuesday. “This is where Waymo began and where we’re headquartered. Now we’re bringing seamless rides, safer streets, and sustainable transportation to our local community.”

Alphabet has been aggressively increasing Waymo, with plans to check in 10 new cities this 12 months. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai mentioned through the firm’s newest earnings name that Waymo is engaged on new model of its driving know-how that may trim {hardware} prices. The unit is a part of its “other bets” division, a set of futuristic companies that generated $400 million in fourth-quarter income.
