In their first public comments since the Federal Reserve monetary policy meeting this week, some central bank officials on Friday talked up the prospect of raising their now near-zero short-term rate target over the course of the new year.
While the data will ultimately drive what the Fed does, “given my expectations for inflation and labor market conditions, I believe an increase in the target range for the federal-funds rate will be warranted shortly after our asset purchases end,” Fed governor Christopher Waller said in virtual remarks to a group in New York.
