It took 136 grueling moves, but world chess champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway broke through to score the first decisive result of his title match with Russian grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi Friday in Dubai.

The first five games of the scheduled 14-game match had all ended in draws, and for much of the contest Friday Carlsen was hard-pressed to break through the Russian’s tough defense. Friday’s game was one of the longest in the 150-year history of official world chess championship matches.

White held a small but persistent edge in the Catalan Opening, eventually trading his queen for Nepomniachtchi’s two rooks and obtaining an endgame where White had all the winning chances. But Black’s queen and active bishop put up a dogged defense, even as White’s pieces applied pressure on the Black king and the weak kingside pawns.

On Move 80, White was able to transform the position again, trading his rook for Black’s bishop and pawn and obtaining a clear path for his passed e-pawn. It would take another 30 moves of subtle maneuvering before White could advance the critical pawn while shielding his king from harassing checks from the Black queen.

Black appeared to still be holding the draw as late as Move 133, when keeping the queen on the seventh rank with 133…Qe7+ or 133…Qa7 might have saved the game. But it was over after 133…Qg6?? 134. Rf7! Kd8 (Qxe6 135. Ng7+ Kxf7 136. Nxe6 Kxe6 137. Kg5 is a winning pawn ending for white) 135. f5 Qg1 136. Ng7, and Black resigned because there is no good way to prevent the White e-pawn from queening after his own queen checks run out.

Carlsen now leads the match 3 1/2 to 2 1/2. Game 7 of the match will be played Saturday, with the Russian having the advantage of the White pieces. If the score is tied after 14 games, there will a one-day playoff of rapid and blitz games to determine the winner.
